  6.         You should not have any problems getting Feathernet up and running 
  7.         provided you have followed the setup/configuration instructions.

  10. Q: Why does the bbs get to the "Resetting Modem" prompt and stay there?
  11.  
  12. A: You Must use a 'fossil' driver with Feathernet bbs.  D/L the file
  13.    'BNU170.zip' from any bbs or use the 'X00Vxxx.zip' fossil driver.

  15. Q: Why do I get a "Permission Denied" error when I enter my name to logon to
  16.    Feathernet?  It also happens when I run "fnetsm.exe"
  17.  
  18. A: Feathernet REQUIRES the dos file "share.exe" to function due to the
  19.    file locking performed. Since FNET is multiple node capable it always
  20.    employs the file locking EVEN if there is ONLY one node in use.
  21.    Place the command "share.exe" in your 'autoexec.bat' file.  It needs to be
  22.    loaded only once.

  24. Q: When I try to run FNET I get a "fatal" error and the program goes to 
  25.    dos. What's going on?
  26.  
  27. A: Ensure "sr.bat" has been edited and the directory paths in it are correct
  28.    for your setup.  A usual cause of this problem is leaving a blank line on
  29.    the end of the "doors.dat" file or "fnetprot.dat" file.  Remove any blank
  30.    lines and ensure the formatting of these files is correct (refer to
  31.    fnet.doc).

  33. Q: FNET loads and waits for a call but when I try to call the bbs, it doesn't
  34.    answer. What's wrong?
  35.    
  36. A. Run "fncfg.exe" and check your modem initialization string. DO NOT put
  37.    "ATZ" anywhere in it unless you are sure your modem has the proper string 
  38.    saved in NVR (non volatile ram). 
  39.    Remember that your modem must send verbal response codes and that auto-
  40.    answer must be DISABLED.

  43. More Hints & Tips

  46. 1. If you have any trouble getting the bbs running, run "fncfg.exe". Ensure
  47.    ALL items are edited/verified. Then save the setup.
  48.    
  49.    Note also that a single Node bbs MUST be identified as Node 1. 
  50.    
  51.    The Node home directory MUST be identified as well. If this is a single 
  52.    node bbs the bbs home directory and the Node directory May be the same 
  53.    dos directory.
  54.       
  55. 2. The dos file 'share.exe' MUST be run prior to running Feathernet or
  56.    the 'fnetsm.exe' sysop maintenance program. This is necessary even if you
  57.    run ONLY one node!
  58.  
  59. 3. Double check the paths in "sr.bat" and the other ".bat" files which are
  60.    included. Ensure they meet your system setup.
  61.    
  62. 4. If you have extended or expanded memory available, use a virtual (RAM) disk
  63.    as your "work" directory. This will both increase performance and 
  64.    dramatically reduce Hard Disk Access.
  65.    
  66. 5. For the same reasons in #3 abover, if you have extended or expanded memory
  67.    available, install a disk cache. I have found that pc-cache (v5.1 & earlier)
  68.    and Vcache work very well, regardless of what others have told me. I have
  69.    tried Mace's cache-em and it seemed to not cache as well as pc-cache. Any
  70.    thoughts/feedback on this are welcomed.

  72. 6. If you have a modem which has Non-Volatile Ram (NVR, NVRam, etc) you should
  73.    enter the modem initialization string into the modem's NVRAM then ONLY use
  74.    "ATZ" in your FeatherNet modem initialization string. If your modem is a 
  75.    US Robotics HST or Dual Standard ( or any other high speed modem ) you 
  76.    should have the comm port initialized at the opening baud rate (ie: 19200,
  77.    38400) before saving the initialization string into the modem's NVRAM with 
  78.    the "AT &W" command. The reason is that the US Robotics modem also saves the
  79.    opening baud rate into the NVRam. I don't know about other high speed modems.
  80.    I use Telix to open the comm port at 38400 before I saved my Initialization
  81.    string with the "AT &W" command.

  84. 7. If there are any problems not mentioned here which are keeping Feathernet
  85.    BBS from properly operating, please advise me.  I will  "Chat" with you and
  86.    also accept voice calls after an initial mail/modem contact.
